This lecture, delivered by Dr. Dieter Hayn (LBI for Digital Health and Prevention), explores the principles, methods, and practical applications of Privacy-Preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) in rare disease research.
The session introduces the concept of securely linking health records across institutions while protecting patient privacy and complying with legal and ethical requirements. Participants gain insight into key privacy-preserving approaches, including hashing, encryption, and secure multi-party computation, as well as the challenges associated with cross-institutional data integration, interoperability, and regulatory compliance.
By presenting real-world use cases and implementation scenarios, the lecture demonstrates how PPRL can enable collaborative research and data integration without exposing personally identifiable information. The topic aligns closely with HemaFAIR’s objectives of advancing FAIR data practices, supporting secure and responsible data sharing, and enabling interoperable research infrastructures for rare hematological diseases and other rare conditions.
