Lecture 15 – A Gentle Introduction to Semantic Web

This lecture, delivered by Andra Waagmeester (Amsterdam UMC), provides a gentle introduction to the Semantic Web and its role in enabling FAIR, interoperable, and reusable biomedical data.

The session introduces the fundamental concepts of the Semantic Web, including linked data, ontologies, knowledge representation, and semantic technologies that support data integration across diverse sources. Participants gain insight into how semantic approaches can transform fragmented datasets into interconnected knowledge networks, facilitating data discovery, interoperability, and reuse in health and life sciences research.

By presenting practical examples and real-world applications, the lecture demonstrates how Semantic Web technologies can enhance data integration, support knowledge discovery, and enable more effective collaboration across institutions and disciplines. The topic aligns closely with HemaFAIR’s objectives of advancing FAIR data practices, improving interoperability, and building sustainable data infrastructures for rare hematological disease research.
